KOTO MUSIC explores the history and the many styles of music written for the Koto, a long, plucked zither, which fills a parallel position in Japan to the piano in Europe and the United States. Written and hosted by Dr. William P. Malm, Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology and Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan, this program features the artists Yoshimura Nanae, koto; Fujii Chiyoga, koto and sangen; Kishibe Michiga, koto; Fukami Satommi, koto and sangen; and Mitsuhashi Kifu, shakuhachi. Filmed in Tokyo with historical art and photography.
